Before I Die by Candy ChangAdaptive reuse is in its element with this spirited public art project. Transforming the negative connotations attached to abandoned spaces, Candy Chang - a public installation artist, designer, and urban planner - has renewed an abandoned building in New Orleans to create this interactive public art project.1
Before I Die by Candy Chang‘Before I Die’ invites people to form a collective memory of their aspirations, and hopes by writing them on the wall for all to see. The site becomes a space for the community to share their dreams with each other, adapting the site for a constructive purpose.2
Before I Die by Candy ChangThe wall of an abandoned building in Candy’s neighbourhood was painted with chalkboard paint and stencilled with a grid, each line beginning “Before I die I want to _______” leaving a space to be filled in by passers-by in chalk.3
Before I Die by Candy ChangThe art project has become a hit in the local community, keeping a public record of local resident’s expectations and goals.4
Before I Die by Candy ChangThe installation became a reality in February 2011 and, following an overwhelming positive response, the project is currently expanding to other cities.5
