Blu Homes’ Founder Completes His Own Prefab Origin Artist Studio

<a href="http://www.inhabitat.com/2010/04/01/blu-homes-unveils-two-story-evolution-prefab-home/" target="_blank">Blu Homes</a> has a wide range of prefab options and one of their most versatile options is their <a href="http://www.bluhomes.com/homes/origin/" target="_blank">Origin series</a> based on a simple rectangular prefab structure with multiple sizes and interior floor plan configurations. The prefab manufacturer recently put the finishing touches on three Origin units combined to make a backyard home addition and <a href="http://inhabitat.com/2010/05/21/gorgeous-shipping-container-art-studio-in-new-york/" target="_blank">artist studio</a> for the founder of the company. The three energy efficient units are fit together in a unique way, oriented to the south to take advantage of the sun and topped off with a spiral staircase and rooftop deck.

The three unit home addition is located in Wayland, MA and serves as an artist studio, photo studio and media room for Blu Homes' founder, Bill Haney's family.

The home addition uses three Origin structures, each with a different floorplan and furnished inside with bamboo flooring.

The Origin line has been updated from its previous design and now includes LED lighting, standard radiant floor heating and options for cedar sunshades, trellises, sliding door shades and a roofdeck.

Origin buildings start out at $82,000 for the studio and the Origin home starts at $109,000.

All of the Blu Homes are designed for energy efficiency, natural daylighting, and healthy interiors.

Homes are manufactured in their MA factory and then folded, flat-packed and shipped to the site.

This particular home took one month to build in the factory and coincided with the site work prep. After the home was shipped to the site, construction and installation took only a few days.

The Haneys' art studio and addition was finished on the exterior with galvalume siding and sliding cedar shades.

A fun addition to the home is the spiral staircase and a roof top deck, which make excellent use of an often unused space.

This is the floorplan for the largest size of the Origin homes and includes two bedrooms and one bathroom.

The Origin series is designed to be Blu's most versatile design and can be built with flat, shed or gable roof.
