We’ve all heard the term “vehicle of the future” being tossed around by everyone, but what does it mean? BMW’s response is the Vision EfficientDynamics concept vehicle, a low carbon plug-in hybrid supercar geared towards the premium end of the market that they hope will point the way for their future in this increasingly fuel-efficiency-minded market. The vehicle is powered by a three-cylinder turbodiesel engine supported by two electric motors. It has a top speed of 250 kilometers per hour (250mph) and can do 0-100 kilometers per hour (0-60mph) in 4.8 seconds. Where the vehicle really excels is in its
emissions output. While running on diesel, the vehicle has a consumption of 3.76 litres per 100 kilometers or around 99 grams of CO2 per kilometer.
Of course, for most of us, what matters is the day to day use. For those occassions, the vehicle can be used in an electric mode only, which can be recharged thanks to its plug-in module. In its electric mode, the vehicle stores the energy on its lithium polymer cells, which allow it to drive for around 50km (31 miles) on a single charge. This can be extended a bit thanks to its regenerative braking system.
All is well and good, and we must admit that it looks better than anything that BMW has put out in years. The car design is slick and smooth with a visage that clearly calls out for attention. The vehicle seats up to 4 people (in theory as we’d like to say) in an interior designed to use as many natural materials as it can do so at this time. The vehicle has been optimized in both its drag coefficient (based on Formula 1 studies), and its weight, which has been reduced and redistributed to maximize energy efficiency and improve driveability.
As a final touch, both the roof and door inserts become opaque to reduce the amount of glare coming into the vehicle – quite a nice perk. The car will officially be unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September.

BMW seems not to have understanden everything to eco-vehicles….
I strolled into the BMW dealership last week, for the first time. They had an eco diesel out front that promised 36 or 38 MPG. I wasn’t all that impressed given the fact that diesel costs more than premium gasoline in my area.
Inside the dealership, I met with a surprise. No, not the prices, I was somewhat prepared for those. What blew me away was the horrid gas mileage the all of the vehicles got. BMW fuel economy was in the teens, whereas their Japanese counterparts were in the mid to upper 20′s. I never realized that they were so poor on fuel.
Now, the car in the article is a concept car that will never be available but, if it were available, it would likely cost $100,000 or more. I’d rather have a Tesla S coupe.
If you get bad milage you need to learn to drive properly! Most Beemers have excellent fuel consumption given the engine sizes. However most people get bad milage due to it being a great car to drive and it sounds great when giving it a bit of stick! is you drive calmly, you will get excellent consumption!
