Britomart’s Leafy Three Storey Green Wall is New Zealand’s Largest

New Zealand is the latest in a string of countries to boast their <a href="http://inhabitat.com/largest-green-wall-in-north-america-to-be-unveiled-tomorrow/">"largest" green wall</a>. Three storeys high and literally covered in native and exotic flora, the new wall fills up Britomart's E. Complex atrium in Auckland. Besting other landscape architects, <a href="http://www.naturalhabitatslandscapes.co.nz/">Native Habitats</a> loosely modeled their wall's planting pattern on Maori carvings.

Only 120mm deep, the living wall features native and exotic epiphytes, ferns, climbers, and groundcovers that serve multiple functions.

In addition to improving the building's overall air quality, the plants remove <a href="http://inhabitat.com/is-it-green-sherwin-williams-paint/attachment/18578/">Volatile Organic Compounds</a> (VOC) and improve energy efficiency by 23%.

<a href="http://inhabitat.com/moss-your-city-gorgeous-living-walls-sprout-in-london/">Living walls</a> also help to regulate interior temperatures and humidity levels.

The Britomart wall also has sensors that switch on when light levels fall too low, and can be remotely irrigated.
