Gallery: Chile-based COMUN Arquitectos Create Low-Cost Home off the Bea...

Chile-based COMUN Arquitectos designed this 1,500-square-foot home on a rural lot in San Manuel, Chile for a family in need of a low-cost house. Designers Catalina Gonzalez and Sebastian Yurjevic were approached by a family with two young children with a 54,000-square-foot lot in a rural area near Melipilla, Chile. Encouraged to blend the natural surroundings and materiality with the identity of the house, the interior and exterior elements of the home are wonderful interpretations of international modern design.

The structure of the building was designed from wood and reinforced brick. The wood siding on the exterior is complimented well by the natural interior wood accents, such as the whole log columns in the kitchen. The interior’s white walls create a wonderful canvas for the eye-popping red furnishings, as well.

The features of the low-cost design include daylighting and simplified material details. The extreme geometries of the roof help to create wonderful interest in this ranch home. Clerestory windows within these roof geometries flood the interior with light, while also leading nature to come into the building through framed views.
