The art of pressing and preserving flowers has been around for who knows how many years. Not only is it a beautiful and simple way to retain the memory of a moment, but it’s a green way to create an incredible piece of decor. Spanish artist Ignacio Canales Aracil has taken this crafty technique and bumped it up a notch with his airy and delicate sculptures. Part dome, part surrealism, Aracil’s flower sculptures are woven together and explore the fragility of time.
Aracil hand-picked the flowers from around the UK, flattened them and then wove them together over a cone shaped paper mold. After a couple weeks, the flowers dried out to maintain a shape stable enough for the mold to be removed. Besides a layer of varnish to keep the flowers from absorbing moisture, Aracil’s natural sculptures do not use any other material to hold them together except the intricate weaving pattern.
Looking closely, one can see the beautiful individual flowers, ferns and stems emerge. Aracil completed two of these sculptures, entitled the Fragility of Time 1 and 2 and it’s easy to see why he named them as such. It almost appears as though just a slight gust could break up the sculptures and send them scattering like a dandelion in the wind.
