  • Hudson River Park’s Chelsea Cove on Pier 62 recently opened a beautiful carousel and covered it with an expansive green-roofed canopy that is topped with solar panels to keep the carousel spinning. CRStudios Architects designed the canopy to protect the park goers and to keep the carousel’s vivid lights energized and shining bright. The complex is a sophisticated and fun addition to New York City’s longest continuous river park.

The carousel lets kids belly up to the indigenous species of the Hudson Valley, including a peregrine falcon, harbor seal, wild turkey, black bear, green-scaled Atlantic sturgeon, and… a unicorn. Bet you didn’t know unicorns are native to New York!

The solar system is intended to power the carousel on bright days, and the green canopy is designed to keep everyone cool and dry. The canopy is suspended with a complex series of trusses and holds a green roof composed of cacti. The building creates a very organic space in the diverse park, which also includes a boardwalk, multiple pathways and a huge new skate park.
