Gallery: Fast-Growing Bamboo Clads Kengo Kuma’s Tranquil Garden Terrace...

Kengo Kuma expressed an intention to create a calm, soothing atmosphere

The modest 4,562 square-meter hotel has an angled roof and is wrapped in fast-growing bamboo. A timber shelter hovers over the entrance, which leads to an expansive reception area that then leads to the courtyard. A small, glazed wedding chapel is bathed in diffused natural light, while pools of water combined with planted bamboo provide an incredible sense of calm.

On the other side of the courtyard lies a series of restaurants, banquet rooms and guest rooms, which are all on the lower level. The zen-like courtyard creates a comfortable micro climate while the renewable bamboo cladding protects against solar gain. This is no ordinary Holiday Inn, but then again, everything Kengo Kuma does is extraordinary.
