Working with locally-source, natural materials, environmental artist
Jaakko Pernu creates impressive, large-scale public sculptures. Because they're exposed to the elements, his huge sculptures change daily, following nature's rhythms. Surreal, big and gorgeous, Pernu's sculptures are hard to miss on the streets and in parks of
Oulu, Finland.
Jaakko Pernu’s environmental sculptures are inspired by the artist’s experiences growing up in Finland, where he was always helping his father build boats, manipulating wood into organic shapes. That experience with creating elegant shapes shows in his large environmental sculptures. Pernu’s favorite working material is locally-sourced willow branches, which he weaves with his own hands. His sculptures can resemble parasols, spinning tops, and other geometric shapes.
