Jay Shafer has been building and living in tiny houses since 1999 and has since been working to encourage more people that they don’t need nearly as much living space as they think they do. His Tumbleweed Tiny House Company has become quite successful and hundreds of people have bought plans from him to build their own mobile tiny home. Today Shafer launched a new company called Four Lights Houses. As explained over at Tiny House Design, Shafer wanted to return to his original mission, which was to design and build tiny houses. Shafer said, “For some of the same reasons I started designing, building and living in small houses in the first place – for more freedom and more manageability. The message and design philosophy I’d built my original company on had become harder and harder to maintain as the business grew from a one-man operation into what it is today.”
Four Lights Houses currently offers three home designs and plans can be bought for $199 each with sizes ranging from 112 sq ft up to a whopping 284 sq ft. Shafer has plans to unveil one new home design each month for the next five months for a total of 8 homes by next spring. This February he will offer up a 5 day hands-on tiny home building workshop in Sebastopol, CA and he will soon offer up tiny furnishings fit for your tiny home. Also in the works through Four Lights Houses is a tiny house community in Sonoma County aptly named The Napoleon Complex, offering up Co-Housing for the Antisocial in 2015. Good luck to Jay and his new venture.
