The National Trust is a nonprofit research group as well as a historic building and land conservancy. The trust was founded in 1897 in reaction to the growing industrialization of England.
We have written about grassy love seats and other examples of literal lawn furniture before, but never at this scale, and for such a great cause. The National Trust conducted a survey on the habits of British families, and when they saw that the average family spent an average of 13 weeks each year on their sofas they decided to act — well, compromise.
To encourage the public to enjoy some time outdoors without leaving behind their creature comforts, the National Trust installed 10 larger than life sofas throughout England. Each sod sofa comes complete with a matching coffee table, creating an outdoor living room. The sofas are placed from downtown London to Northern Ireland, to the Trust’s own land on Wembury Point. With a little self-effacing humor the Brits can have their tea by the seaside, in the comfort of their familiar living room.

Niche horticulture? Special training? Specialized techniques?
Grows so fast – particular species of grass? engineered irrigation? pest control needed to suppress weeds and/or fungi like pythium or other water molds? maintenance, obviously, requires a grounds crew with a mower!
