With the overwhelming number of generic black laptop totes flooding the market these days, it was refreshing to have a close encounter with Giles Miller’s unique Corrugated Cardboard Laptop Case at London’s [re]Design exhibit this fall. Sturdy, stylish, and completely sustainable, the cardboard lining the front of Miller’s tree-loving creation is 100% recycled, and the unique fluting gives its wearer the option to personalize it with custom designs such as one’s initials (or an apple logo — as shown here).
If you are looking for something a little warmer, the case also comes in cosier-looking versions craftily constructed out of old carpet patches. Feeding off the plethora of potential possibilites that have become available to him via working with sustainable design, the young UK designer primarily focuses his energy on three primary categories of sustainability: using recycled and recyclable materials, using all-natural materials and re-using existing objects and products. Miller showed off a number of other recycled corregated cardboard pieces at the London Design Festival this year, including tables, lamps and room dividers. His simple but brilliant fluting process is what caught our eye and makes this refined work rise above all the other cardboard designers out there.

Looks nice, but I don’t see any space for power supply, mouse, etc.
Neat but completely useless to me. How long will this last compared to a standard bag? I’m guessing not very long. Is it really viable to protect a multi-hundred dollar PC with paper?
Nice idea.. very nice. Shouldnt be too hard to fab up another using someing like coroplast (a corrogated plastic board). Not as enviro friendly, but would retain the look and add the possibility to be waterproof.
That and a collection of the shop scraps for a little while could yeild some nifty looking designs.
Heck, I would sell the thing as is up there, or as a kit with templates and hardware
Is that water resistant? If it rains, is it going to melt?
From the looks of the design show it was entered in, the corrugated design doesn’t look like it was considered for functionality. If you’re going to be using one, primarily as a show piece as you amble down Michigan Avenue on a fall weekend day or some such.
On the other hand, if Giles Miller would produce template kits with the hardware and cutting templates for making one’s own corrugated inserts… the protective inserts could be replace at the user’s whim. Not waterproof (maybe a recycled plastic liner?), but I would think economical. And I would trust the impact resistance of sturdy corrugated over most of the laptop bags I’ve examined….
Overall the idea has merit.
You could add clear packing tape to make it waterproof. Foolish? Maybe not considering the “off the shelf” nature of this product.

This looks great in the picture but wouldn’t stand up to a week’s worth of use. Why do post like this get run when all they do is distract from the mission of connecting consumers with useful green design?

thanks to everyone for leaving a message about my work. i would just like to point out that this case is coated with water-resistant spray, and also that you can get different grades of cardboard, of which this particular type is highly dense and extremely durable. i have had the prototype (in this picture) and been using it every day for months and it is showing absolutley no signs of wear. perhaps people could be a little more open-minded?
the water resistant spray (is it enviromentally friendly) may protect the cardboard from moisture, but what about a downpour, or if someone spills coffee on it while its sitting on a table. your expensive laptop gets soaked (possibly ruined?) i think the higher density cardboard is great for strength, but it needs some better guarantee to protoct the computer from moisture. if that truly is the prototype that is used daily, it does appear to hold up well. i would consider using it, but not until the moisture issue is resolved. perhaps some people don’t take constructive criticism well?

you’re right there is no space for accesories. its really more of a laptop sleeve with a strap!

so im guessing that a computer guided laser cutter was used? If not, these pieces must take forever to make. Also again with the water resistant thing. There must be some kind of sealer or wax you could put on the cardboard to make it water resistant.

despite what other posts are here i think this design is wonderful. it gets so boring with all the same laptop bags everywhere you go. It’s nice if someone wants to be different for a change. It seems like a great idea and i think you should continue coming up with them.

Soo, I found this game yesterday, and I completely fell in LOVE!
It’s basically like WoW, an 3D-MMORPG, and it had its open beta launch only few days ago (17th January). Go to check http://holic.netgame.com, if youre interested/bored.
