Gallery: Green Halloween Costume Contest Winners!

Halloween is officially over now and we saw a lot of entertaining, inspiring and just plain weird costumes this year. After sifting through the submissions, we’ve decided that the Inhabitat Green Halloween Costume Contest first prize goes to the team of ‘Green Building Fairies’ from University of Tennessee. Using leftover model-making material, this team of architecture students fashioned themselves into fairies of green building — even going as far as creating green roof ‘hats’ with little solar panels on top of them. How Inhabitat is that? You ladies clearly know what we like here at Inhabitat.. and for that you are this years prize winner.

Second prize goes to the Curious George & Man-in-a-Yellow Hat. As far as we can tell this has nothing to do with green design on a conceptual level, but the costumes were made completely from recycled household items, and you can tell these guys put some work into it! These are pretty impressive costumes.

Curious George was recycled from 2 brown sweaters. and The Man in the Yellow Hat was sourced from a pair of thrift-store yellow pants, a modified cowboy hat from the attic, and other already-owned accessories.

Below are the rest of the runners-up…

These guys explained this costume as ‘The Heatmiser and the Snowmiser’. We’re not entirely sure what that means – but it looks like a good portrait of climate change – so we’re sticking with that!

We love puns here, so of course we are going to love a trashy ‘bag lady’ who’s costume is made entirely out of old plastic bags. Not entirely sure about the social implications of this one, but at least she found a use for all those bags..

Another hand-made plastic bag costume comes in the form of this blackbird

Is she a hotdog? A tofu pup? We’re not entirely sure but its cute.

This little king put his costume together out of household items and thrift store finds.

Heatmiser and Snowmiser are awesome characters from a stop-motion animation Christmas movie by Jules Bass, known as The Year Without a Santa Claus. It is an amazing movie, and those costumes are pretty much perfect. Check out the movie on ABC Family this holiday season. They show it every year.

ok that hotdog outfit is truly clever. i bet the inspiration started with the bun-vest. and the relish? brava. and curious george and the man in the yellow hat are fantastic. that’s commitment. i’m not familiar with the heat and snowmisers, but their attention to detail and craftiness is remarkable. would it be weird to have a pic from halloween be used for a christmas card? cause lil elvis and his houndog are prescious. even the stroller’s decorated. thanks inhabitat, really fun!
