Gallery: Green-Roofed Casa Cabeço Rises From the Hills Like a Giant Pum...

Site plan

Whilst a north-facing plot should have provided ideal lighting conditions, MSB Arquitectos opened the home to the south as well to ensure that plenty of natural light would penetrate all areas of the home. Split into three separate volumes that appear to slide down the steep slope, the home is connected by vertical elements that give it continuity.

The first level houses the garage, kitchen, laundry and entrance hall, and enjoys the best views of the landscape, while the second, detached level, along with its various bedrooms and bathrooms, is chiseled into the earth and benefits from light wells that emerge from the ground outside. The green roof provides insulation and prevents storm runoff while also providing some kind of harmony with the natural environment. What a great place to catch the sunset.
