Guilherme Torres Recycles Brazilian Artist’s Home Into A New Live Work Space

This beautifully renovated 1940s home originally belonged to the great Brazilian artist <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_Brecheret" target="_blank">Victor Brecheret</a>, whose work can be seen throughout São Paulo. Upon his death, the home sat mostly vacant, housing some of the artist's works until <a href="http://www.guilhermetorres.com/" target="_blank">Guilherme Torres</a> came along and acquired it for use as a live work space. The Brazilian architect recycled and remodeled the two story home into a modern yet simple space that crosses back and forth easily between the indoors and outdoors. Much of the original home remains, except a few modern conveniences have been added along with Torres' aesthetic of a purist base with simple pops of color.

Outside at the entrance is a neon sign, by <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/pinkywainer" target="_blank">Pinky Wainer</a>, which says 'land of the free, home of the brave’.

&lt;a href=&quot;<a href="http://www.guilhermetorres.com/" target="_blank">Guilherme Torres</a> was attracted Victor Brecherat's old hom because of it compact size (130 m²) and the privileged location in one of the most charming streets in the Jardins neighborhood in São Paulo.

The home enjoys a large entrance courtyard and is two stories with two bedrooms, two baths and a studio office for Torres.

The floorplan was kept largely intact and the main changes included an update to the gaps, openings and wall coatings.

Simple decor, furniture and a wide open layout makes the home feel even bigger.

A retractable glass roof can be opened or closed over the kitchen, allowing the space to be open to the outdoors during warmer times and closed for cooler days or in inclement weather.

Natural ventilation plays an important role in the home's cooling system and a wooden muxarabie, a registered trademark of the architect, is used to provide shade and soften the sun's rays.

Upstairs the master suite enjoys access to a large terrace and a tub, which looks out over the open air kitchen.
