Gallery: Het Anker is a Green-Roofed Community Center Planned for The N...

The municipality of Zwolle in the Netherlands invited four design firms to submit proposals for a new community center for this up-and-coming city, and they awarded first prize to MoederscheimMoonen Architects for Het Anker. The 3,000 square meter building is topped with a lush green roof, and it aims to take sustainability to a whole new level that the entire community can enjoy.

MoederscheimMoonen Architects will work with the Zwolle city officials to finalize the plans over the next few months. But in the interim, this program is expected to accommodate a multi-space sports hall for various sporting activities, along with a community center and educational facilities.

Not only will the green roof allow the new facility merge with the surrounding landscape and capture rainwater runoff, but it can also reduce the center’s electricity load as it would provide excellent insulation. Once the plans have been finalized, construction is expected to ensue in 2014.
