HWKN’s Aging in Africa Will Be a Sustainable Retirement Village in Côte d’Ivoire

Aging in Africa aims to be the first retirement community on the African continent which is dedicated entirely to caring for those without family.

According to the project, located in the Ivory Coast, Catholic priests are a group often excluded from care in a family-based society. So a team of architects developed the center to provide a space where these individuals can benefit from the residency to enjoy a healthy and comfortable lifestyle.

The center itself resembles a typical village from the country, arranged around a central spine on a strip of land that lies between the Atlantic and an inland lagoon.

All the public buildings are constructed around the village's central axis in order to encourage a sense of community, and vegetation is planted amidst the community's single story residences.
