INTERVIEW: Inhabitat Chats with Recycled Wood Designers Scrapile

by , 01/29/12

JILL: So you don’t sell the material by itself?

CARLOS. Not yet. We might do it in the future after we get out there a little more, and get a little more legal protection.

BART: And also, this project is only 2 year old. We want to have made the material for longer than that before we start selling it to people to use, so we know what happens to it in five years, you know?

JILL: Okay, so you do have any new pieces that you want the public to know about?

CARLOS. Our newest pieces are the crates, the square lamps, the circular table and the shelves. While some of our pieces can be found online at Vivavi, and at a couple shops in New York and in California, for the newest pieces like the lamps and cubes, people can just contact us directly at scrapilenyc@hotmail.com

JILL: Okay, well thanks so much for taking the time to do this interview. I love your work, and I know I’m not the only one. I think people are going to be really interested in learning more about it.

I’m looking at your ‘Green’ Furniture designs made of assorted laminated woods. I notice you have chosen to laminated various plywood and chipboard with all kinds of hardwood. Having acquired this stuff by way of scrap piles, every piece of your wood will have a varying moisture content and therefore expand and contract differently from each peice adjacent to it. Especially in the case of plywood, which is extremely stable, and the hardwoods (while being only a section of a tree, are very much alive). How are you accounting for this material expansion in your designs? Do you let it aclimate? Are you kiln-drying each peice to the same moisture content?

Beautiful stuff. I love seeing green and sustainable projects on here. I wonder if they go after construction waste, too. That’d probably be a different line entirely, but could make for some lovely stuff with a rougher look.
