Johnsen Schmaling Architects’ Modest Stacked Cabin Wins Third Architectural Award!

Remote. Modest. Small. All of these words begin to describe <a href="http://www.johnsenschmaling.com/">Johnsen Schmaling Architects’</a> award-winning <a href="http://www.johnsenschmaling.com/stackedcabin/index.html">Stacked Cabin</a> located in a rural Wisconsin forest outside of Muscoda. This 880-square-foot cabin houses a young family who came to Johnsen Schmaling looking for a simple structure on a tight budget. Little did they know that this structure would be awarded three times in 2012 for an AIA Honor Award, a Residential Architect Design Award, and a <a href="http://www.aia.org/press/releases/AIAB095553">National AIA Small Projects Award </a>.

The living space has large, operable, glass window walls which allow the interior space to extend out into the forest.

The interior spaces are easily divided by floor-to-ceiling curtains.

The Stacked Cabin is situated in a remote area of a Wisconsin forest. The home's only neighbor is the forest itself.

The minimalist building is designed much like many of the 1960s Modernist homes, and this design inspires the occupants to interact with nature.

A wood burning fireplace breaks the simple, empty elegance of the interior living space.

The floor-to-ceiling curtain allows the occupant to close off the galley kitchen and the sleeping area from view.

Johnsen Schmaling, all-in-all, has represented Wisconsin well with the design ethic that they have carried over into <a href="http://www.archdaily.com/258981/aia-selects-the-2012-recipients-of-the-small-project-awards/os-house_johnjmacaulay_03/">other projects</a>. It is no wonder they have been awarded multiple times for such small and modest projects in some of the most remote areas.
