Gallery: Lakeside Private House Bellmund Has a Hardy Shell and a Warm W...

At first glance, EXH Design's Private House Bellmund in Switzerland looks like an industrial home more suited to an urban environment than this gorgeous lakeside plot. But closer examination reveals a sculptural asymmetric residence with a hardy shell and a warm, inviting interior. Carefully arranged to get the best view of nearby Lake Biennem, the home has a rooftop terrace and plenty of daylighting.

Located in an agricultural region outside of Biel, this striking home has a timber frame and interior and a strong, low-cost corrugated skin that makes the home tolerant of all manner of harsh weather conditions, the designers told Dezeen. However, the comfortable light-filled interior contrasts with the rugged envelope.

The home has a gabled roof with a corner cutout that makes room for a rooftop terrace. Large floor to ceiling windows ensure that natural light fills the entire home without the need for artificial lighting during the day. A small overhang shades a modest patio designed for outdoor dining and relaxation. Albeit a deviation from some of our favorite alpine houses, Private House Bellmund answers the call for cost-effective housing that requires little maintenance.
