Lanefab Design/Build recently completed the city of Vancouver’s first Net-Zero Solar Laneway House. The house, built as an infill on an existing residential lot, is 1020 square feet with 1 bedroom and 2 baths, and it will be the new home for the owners of the existing main house. The project was built using prefab structural insulated panels (SIPs), has 95% LED lighting, a 500 gallon in-ground rainwater tank, drainwater heat recovery, a heat recovery ventilator, an air source heat pump, and an array of 12 solar panels on the roof. The 18′ multi-fold doors create a wide open indoor-outdoor connection while providing passive solar heating.

    Dear Friends of Solar Heating !Years of study diffrent solar heatingsystems, has lead me to the conclusion that the most ecologic way of using the sun for house and waterheating,is the passive annual heatstorage.also the research at the rocky mountain research center and at earthshelter.com shows clearly the incredible benefits of free heating all year round plus the carbons saved…the thermal mass(insulated) of surrounding earth is naturally heating up in the summer and radiating back to the house in the winter.one draw back is the massive use of concrete in the proposed builing at earthshelter.com,which i oppose and i am looking for renewable ecological materials,timberframe and claybrick walls i.e. which are availlable locally and are healthy to live with/in.there is a lot of developement of so called ecological solutions,but the materials used are often toxic,gassing,bad plastics like pvc plus the extra use of electricity from the grid,is not really costeffective,not counting all the electronic gadgets….etc.is also not for everybodys pocket..if northern europe and the northern part of the american continent would widely use the passive annual heatstorage,there would be a tremendous amount of fossil energy saved..
