Gallery: Lawn Mower Bike Is a Fun and Fuel-Free Way to Trim Your Yard

If you’ve been looking for a more exciting way to cut the grass, forget about those souped up gas lawnmowers – this clever and inventive design takes mowing the lawn to a whole new level. Built from an old-fashioned push-and-pull mower and a folding bike, Florian Hauswirth‘s lawn mower cycle is a practical and fun design solution to keeping your garden tidy. And given the smile on the face of the rider above, we’ve gotta say: lawn mower bike races anyone?

The “smile” is a grimace, I think. That does not look like fun.

The real question is: why hasn’t anyone thought of it sooner? Sure, this crude example can be improved upon, but will anyone bother? Please, I wish someone would stop talking about it and do it. Not everyone can hack something together. We need this as a product that can be ordered. With 6 acres that includes some brush, I need a pedal powered DR brush cutter!

Crude example of an interesting concept. I have tried the old fashioned real mowers and found them really impractical for a yard of any size. The problem here is the gearing is likely way too high, easily fixable with a gearing swap. I’m curious if one tire has enough traction to push this reliably? My guess is would need a much fatter tire, perhaps a motorcycle tire on a purpose built lightweight wheel? The center of gravity looks too high. Could have reverse by using a simple fixie type gearing setup (and alternate braking).
