Gallery: Makoto Azuma Suspends Bonsai Trees Then Returns Them to the Ea...

Makoto Azuma has created this series of delicate botanical artwork for an updated edition of the 2005 ‘Shiki Formula’. Each bonsai plant in his series is extracted from where it grows with extreme precision, and then photographed before being returned to its soil unharmed. These beautiful pieces have an almost melancholic undertone, as the plants are suspended to appear both lifeless and vulnerable. But knowing that they are carefully replanted removes the distress of the sculptures, while still magnifying the plant’s fragility. Breathtaking.
