Marinetek Unveils Finland’s First Floating Village!

The <a href="http://www.marinetekgroup.com/en/home/" target="_blank">Marinetek Group</a> and <a href="http://www.sito.fi/en/company/" target="_blank">Sito</a> are currently constructing Finland's first floating village! The lightweight <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nrja-designs-a-two-story-houseboat-for-long-latvian-summers/" target="_blank">floating villas</a> are equipped with energy-saving systems and technologies, and they were designed to withstand extreme winds and wave conditions. Located in Pori, the project is aiming for LEED certification and it will comprise a total of 16 houses when complete.

The architectural style of the village was inspired by traditional northern boat sheds, which are made of wood and feature black pitched roofs.

Currently two <a href="http://inhabitat.com/floating-houses/">floating homes</a> are finished, and once completed the village apartments will vary from 52 square meters to 93 square meters.

Trucks or cargo ships transport the homes in <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nomadic-resorts-prefab-pod-homes-can-pop-up-anywhere/" target="_blank">prefabricated</a> modules to the building site, where they are assembled and lifted onto heavy pontoons.

The structures are then floated to their designated locations and anchored to the seabed.

They are connected to the municipal water and sewage system with individual waste disposing shredder pumps, which are maintained via inspection hatches located in the piers.

The buildings feature <a href="http://inhabitat.com/artica-natural-cooling-ventilation-and-heat-recovery-system/" target="_blank">heat recovery systems</a> which reduce energy used for climate control by 80%, according to Marinetek.

The houses can be equipped with solar thermal panels to lower their energy consumption even further.
