Gallery: The Twist: MenoMenoPiu Architects Propose Solar-Powered Stadiu...

Thanks to the elliptical ramp, the entire stadium can be evacuated in just 15 minutes, according to MenoMenoPiu Architects.

The Twist gets its name from its spiral-shaped, ramp-like structure, which makes it fully accessible to people with disabilities and able to easily to accommodate large crowds coming and leaving different events. Thanks to the elliptical ramp, the entire stadium can be evacuated in just 15 minutes, according to MenoMenoPiu Architects. The stadium will have a capacity of 80,000 people, and it will be able to accommodate a wide variety of sports and cultural events ranging from soccer, rugby and track & field to concerts.

Of course, our chief interest is in the sustainability features, which are quite impressive. The Twist’s roof will be covered in solar panels, which will be used to power stadium operations. The stadium’s retractable roof will be covered with an opaque metal structure, upon which a variety of translucent and opaque photovoltaic panels will be installed. The stadium will also feature a rainwater retention system, which will harvest rainwater and reuse it on-site.

The multi-purpose stadium looks like it would be an excellent addition to the city — now all Tokyo has to do is win its bid to host the games.

There was a contest held a while back to redesign the Tokyo National Stadium, and a design won by Zaha Hadid and should be complete before the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Tokyo. As eco-friendly as this design is, I think the Zaha Hadid design is quite striking and I\’ve always been a fan of her work.
