Method Homes Prefab Cabin
As summer hits its stride and the allure of the outdoors arrives we’re happy to report that Method Home’s modern wood wonder has blossomed into a beautiful home. If it seems like a short while since we first introduced you to the “down to earth prefab” you’re right; construction of the cabin took just three months! Situated in Seattle, Washington, the home exudes woodsy warmth tempered by a refined modern form.
The Method Cabin‘s breathtakingly quick construction is a rarity in the prefab world, particularly for a prototype. It seems like all too often the customizable nature of prefabricated homes tends to blow past deadlines as builders wend kinks in the woodwork.
To accomplish the feat Method employed a team of expert craftsmen to factory construct the home, reducing its construction waste 50%. The cabin is composed entirely of FSC-certified lumber and includes a variety of sustainable features including energy efficient appliances, eco-friendly cabinets and counter tops, VOC-free paint, and highly efficient insulation.
Method Homes is currently conducting open house tours and the Cabin will soon be available for rentals, so if you’re in the greater Washington area swing on by!

Looks nice. Too bad that no one at Inhabitat or Method Homes feels it’s important to publish the cost of the home. Or the size (in square feet). Or what energy sources it’s using. Given the house’s forested setting, I would imagine that solar and wind would be poor choice from a return on investment perspective. I would very tempted to buy one of these if more information was forthcoming.

With a few clicks on the multiple links listed, quite a bit of additional information is available. The Method Home\’s site lists the Method Cabin size at 1811 sq ft, 3BR, 2 Bath. Although I have not found finished costs available, previous posts (also linked) estimated costs between $150 and $250/sq ft (yeah, big range). The Method Home\’s site briefly mentioned available solar hookups, LEED 2.0 Gold standards, and other sustainability items. Still too expensive overall, but more eye candy to build ideas from.
That is so beautiful – i would love to have something just like that but 600 sq ft instead! (I like my house small with less space to clean) Ya’ll always find so many great sustainable home ideas!
A nice entry… but still not ‘it’. The real deal will happen with welded, or bolted together, 4″ x 4″ hollow galvanized steel tubing as the frame… and sustainable wood & eco foam – Structurally Insulated Panels (SIP’s) as the walls floors and roof. Also, pouring a slab is not optimal. Using concrete piers topped with steel ‘I-beam’ rails… as the foundation… is better, cheaper, and less destructive of the natural surroundings. Taking this design concept and making these amendments would cut the price in half… AND make it a project which uses already available, ‘off the shelf’ components’… which would allow it to be a a largely ‘self-fab’ project, with expert help, if such was desired.
