Gallery: MODERN-SHED

These days I’m feeling a little forlorn that I’ve moved away from the golden state, and thus missed CA Boom, which just wrapped up last night in Santa Monica. Fortunately the event is being thoroughly covered by Land + Living, Treehugger, and Mocoloco, so check out those sites for the latest reports.

On Treehugger I just spotted this wonderful Modern-Shed, which has got to be the most affordable pre-fab dwelling in existance. Designed to function as backyard storage space, an office, small art studio, or even a guest bedroom, it can be easily assembled in a weekend. There are three basic models which range in price from $5700 – $7800. What a steal!

I will be living in one of these until I buy my first house.

I think they have several different models. The one they had on display at CA Boom last weekend had two windows. Here’s a shot of the model that was on display:

Great structures! I would love to put one in my backyard as an office.

Anyone who has seen these in person: How sturdy do they seem? How well insulated? Do they look as solid and substantial in person as they do in photos? Thanks.

Seeing them in person is great- these sheds are like a well finished house. I was very impressed with the model at CA Boom. A fantastic extra room.

At last. My teenage appreciation of the garage in preference over the house, is vindicated. Even the most funtional, overlooked and neglected structures ofthe residential landscape are now getting the overdue attention they deserve. And look at what beauties are born.
When I moved into my parent’s Ohio garage/storage shed at 16, the all thought I was crazy, and said even worse. Past forty, my self-built homes reflect a similiar aestethic and no one thinks I am crazy. And all they can say is positive and laiden with envy.
Beautiful, beautiful, and under the building code wire. I am looking forward to much more from these designers/builders/architects/good thinkers. Familiar and approachable by anyone, any well concieved and executed structure can be “a man’s castle”. As FLW was so fond of reminding us, “should be as inspiring as any canyon or cathedral.” And this simple shed meets that standard.

Well Done. It is work like this that gives me hope.

[...] FutureShed follows the studio’s thorough principles of sustainability (see their Eco-design strategy), utilizing FSC-certified, locally-sourced timber, free of toxic adhesives and sealants; a fully translucent roof for maximum daylight and natural midwinter heat; and self-bearing walls that require no extraneous framing or hardware. Like some of the other sheds we’ve showcased here, this garden habitat can be used as a children’s playhouse, a storage space, a workshop, or a backyard getaway. But we think this one, designed in collaboration with design engineering student, Mara Callaert, is exceptionally beautiful. [...]
