Elegant New Fire Island Pines Pavilion by HWKN is a Timber Resort by the Sea

  • New Fire Island Pines Pavilion HWKN
    The <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nyc/hwkn-designs-brand-new-wooden-pavilion-for-fire-island-pines-gay-resort/" target="_blank">new Pavilion Dance Club at Fire Island Pines</a>, NY, is nearing completion. The pavilion was redesigned by New York-based <a href="http://www.hwkn.com/" target="_blank">HWKN</a> to replace the original structure that was destroyed in 2011 by a devastating fire, and many hope the large timber structure with 2,600 square feet of outdoor terraces and a 2,400 square foot dance floor will outshine the previous legendary club.

    The asymmetric Pavilion embraces its temporary nature and utilizes scaffolding as the main structure.

    The exterior frame is made out of criss-crossing timber braces and creates an enclosure which still allows for natural ventilation in summer.

    The wooden exterior structure incorporates a public boardwalk and a Welcome Bar that serves as a meeting place for all residents and over 800,000 visitors that arrive at the island each year.

    Dominating the second floor are a 2,400 square-foot dance floor and a 2,600 square-foot outdoor terrace with host High Tea in the evenings and is used as a lounge at night.

    An internal winding loop of stairs connects all the floors. Stadium steps cascade out from one wall inside the club and create an elevated view of the dance floor.

    The intertwining of interior and exterior spaces provides exposure to the salty air, bay breeze and the sound of waves splashing against the shore.
