LivingHome’s KT1.1 Expandable Single Family Residence
The environmentally conscious, award winning architects KieranTimberlake always manages to amaze us with stunning residential designs that define the true synthesis of green building and architectural excellence. We’ve also been equally enthralled by the business vision of Steve Glenn’s LivingHomes, a development company which has been extremely successful in commissioning and building architecturally-stunning green prefabs. Until now, KieranTimberlake and Living Homes were connected only by their shared drives to bring the best green residential designs to market, but this week the firms announced a partnership to design an exciting new line of versatile, sustainable, and modern prefabs that will make green living affordable and stylish.
LivingHomes KT1 Interior
The partnership between LivingHomes and KieranTimberlake merges a wealth of sustainable prefab expertise that results in three new concepts: LivingHomes Building System (LBS), the KT1 Expandable Single Family Residence and the LivingHomes KT2 Townhouse.
In principle with Living Homes’ exemplary environmental program that sets LEED Silver as the minimum, the new collaboration brings a streamlined modular component system, LivingHomes Building System (LBS), which assembles HVAC distribution, electrical and plumbing into “Smart Panels” for faster, more efficient construction of prefabricated modules.
The LBS system allows for the second exciting development, the KT1 Expandable Single Family Residence which is currently available in three versions from 900 square feet up to 2160 s.f. The built-in beauty of the KT1 (in addition to being ultra-eco-friendly and gorgeous that is) is that the new LBS allows homeowners to start small and add-on environmentally friendly rooms as their needs change. When lifestyle changes call for more space, homeowners can purchase additional KT1 components to expand their home. Currently available in California, Arizona and Florida, the KT1 costs around $215 per s.f. and is expected to drop to $155 per s.f. as availability and production volume increase.

Even as news of the new partnership hits the online world of sustainable design, a project using the new KT2 LivingHomes Townhouse is in the works in San Francisco. The KT2 is KieranTimberlake’s versatile multi-family design which can be built attached or detached. Compact and very livable, this residence is 1,500 s.f. with four variations of a two bedroom / two bath layout. Currently available nationwide for $185 per s.f. and expected to drop to $135 per s.f. as time passes.
All LivingHomes incorporate sustainable, healthy materials, water conserving systems, energy-efficiency and many more green build principles. The the new partnership between KieranTimberlake and LivingHomes is an exciting and promising development in sustainable prefab, one that we are going to be watching with high expectations.

That’s a wonderful home design. So much better than the multitude of townhouses you see going up everywhere. Although I wonder if it would be so nice if there were hundreds of them all next to each other.

I really like the look, especially all the glass. But I think one of the best features it has is the ability to add on as needed. My fiance and I are looking at getting a small eco house but I’m afraid that are needs would change and I like the ability to expand and maintain the overall appearance of the house. Unfortunately we don’t live in any of the states this is available… oh well.

Having to miss out on such systems out here are a real miss, I think. Those systems are quite common in the states, but out here, all prefabs are traditional or ugly, and almost always project unique.
