Gallery: Green Roof Garden by Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects Is a P...

Few people driving the ramps of the parking deck at Rush and Walton Streets in Chicago know of its verdant green roof. Visible from surrounding office and residential towers, the 16,000 square foot green roof by Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects features five planting mixes in an irregular grid pattern. The lush vegetation includes everything from stonecrop to sedum, to chive and feather reed grass.

Tapping into the graphic potential of traditional green roof systems, the roofs challenge assumptions about what can be expected both from green roofs and city views. The designs are all inspired by aerial views of the Midwest’s agricultural landscape, but are designed for different uses – one is for viewing, one is for high-rise residents, and one is for office tenants. The roofs frame dramatic views of lake, meadow and skyline.

Beautiful! If you’d like to learn more about green roofs, Chicago is hosting the CitiesAlive (www.citiesalive.org) green roof conference this October.
