With origins as an outdoor adventure company, Brooklyn Outfitters (BKO) is now expanding into the gear category. Best of all, they're doing it locally. Their first products include two packs sized appropriately for day or multi-day hikes and come in black and red. The affordable packs are designed and handmade in Brooklyn by the company's guides, ensuring they are highly functional and can withstand harsh outdoor conditions.
Based in Williamsburg, BKO was founded in 2010 by Martin Stankiewicz and Stetson Hundgen. The company offers weekly getaways that encourage New Yorkers to take full advantage of the natural landscape just outside city limits. Promoting an active lifestyle, BKO also knows the importance of connecting with the local community. Whether picking up litter on the trail or teaching adventurers about native plant species, BKO constantly searches for ways to help people connect with their surrounding environment.
The new line of packs further reflect this commitment. Named after the co-founders favorite Adirondack high-peak summits, the Wolfjaw (16L) and Algonquin (34L) are hand sewn and therefore completely one-of-a-kind. “We are very excited! Manufacturing gear is the next big step for us in connecting people with the outdoors,” said Stetson Hundgen, co-founder. “We wanted to create a comfortable, functional pack without gimmicky bells and whistles.” Additionally, considering the quality the packs are quite affordable: $99 for the Wolfjaw and $165 for the Algonquin.
All materials, down to the thread and fabric, are made in the USA, and the packs are produced locally in New York. The lightweight (1lb 3 oz- 1lb 9oz), water-resistant packs are made from VX-21, Cordura 400D, and feature foam back support, a large front organizational pocket, multifunctional/removable compression straps, and an adjustable hip strap. The top-loading main compartment with a roll-top closure allows for easy access while also securely holding gear. The rugged material and strong seams ensure that the packs will outlast on the trail, ski slopes, biking or around-the-world. The company is so sure of it, they are offering a product lifetime guarantee!
As the company grows and expands their manufacturing presence, they hope to maintain their headquarters in Williamsburg. In addition to guiding, gear repair and continual gear design will provide New Yorkers with one less excuse to stay indoors. Keep your eyes on BKO as they continue to release new products that will make even the most steadfast urbanite want to get outside and test out the stylish gear!
