The newly revealed renderings show the architects’ initial visions for the final section of the High Line, but the details are not finalized The third section’s total cost will be about $90 million (which comes from donors, not the city’s pockets), and it will be open to the public by spring 2014.
The final section of the High Line is currently visible from the park’s northern end at 30th Street. Here, you can see the High Line’s 10th Avenue spur project from the park to the east. Leading up to the spur is a section of the park will pass through the future Tower C of Hudson Yards, much like the original section of the High Line passes under the Standard Hotel.
The images show some familiar design aspects — the wooden lounge chairs, peel-up benches, stadium-like seating — as well as some new features. One rendering shows a children’s play area created from the original beams which have been covered with rubber, and another rendering shows the peel-up typology used to create picnic tables, planters, water features, and a see-saw. Perhaps the most interesting detailed reveal is the interim walkway that will be built over the western curved section to allow visitors to experience the railway in its natural state.
We will be closely following the development of the High Line’s third section, and we will be sure to bring you the latest updates as soon as we have them!
