A few months ago, we reported the tragic crashing of a recycled art installation called Harvest Dome into Rikers Island. We have finally heard the great news that reconstruction is in the works and soon the amazing floating artwork made of discarded umbrellas spokes and soda bottles will be back up and running. Decked out with a LED light system and tiny solar cells, Harvest Dome 2.0 is more sustainable then ever – and hopefully crash proof!
The brainchild of husband and wife team Slo Architecture, Harvest Dome was a community project three years in the making with the collecting of recycled material throughout Manhattan. With the help of local school groups and volunteers, the dome was carefully constructed and set sail down Hudson River towards its permanent exhibition space, the Inwood Hill Park salt water marsh. The structure crashed into Rikers Island en route in October of last year, causing major damage and delays in the piece’s exhibition.
A Kickstarter campaign was recently launched to raise funds to rebuild the geodesic sculpture, resending it to its final resting place for the public to finally enjoy. The addition of LED lights will make the piece visible at night with a glowing halo around its circular frame. The solar cells inside the soda bottles will not only power the lights but may also assist in the dome’s journey down the river. Harvest Dome 2.0′s debut date is now anticipated to be August of this year.
