If you're one of the thousands of New Yorkers whose power was knocked out by
Hurricane Sandy, you were probably scared, anxious and uneasy. Now imagine yourself in the same situation, except that you're 90 years old, wheelchair-bound or hard of hearing.
Many seniors in Lower Manhattan live 20 floors up or higher and are basically stuck in their homes without working elevators, water or power. Others in the "dark zone" of Manhattan have been lining up at fire hydrants for water and huddling up in their apartments for heat. Efforts were underway
the past few days to bring food and water to those with no power, but volunteers are still needed today. If you have some time to lend a hand, read on for a summary of sites where you can make a difference today.
Places in need of volunteers today:
GOLES, 171 Ave B between 10th & 11th St Friday & Saturday between 12-6 pm Knocking on doors to distribute supplies, calling members to make sure they’re ok, posting information, coordinating, etc.
CAAAV, 46 Hester St Friday 10 am-5 pm Knocking on doors to distribute supplies and information.
Help the Smith Apartments, 46 Madison St Friday 10 am- 5 pm Bringing water, food and information to elderly residents stuck in their apartments.
Henry Street Settlement, 265 Henry St Friday, 10:45 am Distributing food to the elderly population
