As Mayor Bloomberg announced the results of New York City’s adAPT NYC Competition last week, the team of Jonathan Rose Companies, Curtis+Ginsberg, Grimshaw, Scape and LifeEdited shared in the excitement of being a finalist. Their submission entitled “CO: Compact, Connected, Complete” proposed a 60-unit apartment building full of micro-apartments of 303 square feet each. This submission was one of many that took on the challenge to create more housing units for one- and two-person households in light of the space restrictions and urban density of NYC.

Designed by a team led by developer Jonathan Rose Companies, this proposed a modern apartment building features three unit options of 303 square feet for small space city living. Each apartment comes with a bathroom, kitchen, convertible bed, and a balcony. The designs are elegant and straight-forward showing a level of thoughtfulness when it comes to the building’s cost-effectiveness and sustainability. Communal spaces can be found throughout the building, which also add to the building’s thoughtfulness.

Micro-apartments continue to grow in acceptance across the United States, and this competition shows the growth through a variety of designs. The team member LifeEdited had a recent micro-apartment commended for its design, while Jonathan Rose Companies is well known for their work in New York City for sustainable housing. The Via Verde apartment complex in the Bronx is one of the most striking designs in the push for sustainable housing in New York City.

    So they changed the law to allow more people per sqft. Real estate developers can now make more money from less sqft. Yay! As rents adjust and this becomes the norm families will only be able to afford 400 sqft apartments. I am not convinced this is the future we want. How about we work on new models of ownership for the residents rather than higher profits for developers.
