New York’s electric vehicle charging program just got another boost. Leviton, the maker of Evr-Green charging stations, was recently awarded a $1 million grant by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority to install electric vehicle charging stations throughout the state. The funds will help Leviton support Governor Andrew Cuomo’s “Charge NY” Initiative—a $50 million program that will add 3,000 public and workplace charging stations over the next five years.

Leviton will use the $1 million grant to install 82 EV charging stations. Other electric vehicle charging station companies awarded grants by NYSERDA include Beam Charging, EV Connect, Car Charging Group and more. In total, NYSERDA has awarded $3.6 million to 14 organizations that will install 360 stations throughout the state.

“Leviton is thrilled to expand our electric vehicle charging station presence and encourage sustainable fuel solutions in Long Island and throughout New York State,” said Michael Mattei, Vice President and General Manager for the Leviton Commercial and Industrial Business Unit. “We look forward to helping local businesses and communities by working with the State of New York to deploy our industry-leading electric vehicle charging stations to promote the benefits and expanded usage of electric vehicles.

Governor Cuomo is encouraging New Yorkers to buy more electric cars and hopes to add up to 40,000 plug-in vehicles on the road during the Charge NY Initiative’s five year time period. With the growing availability of charging stations in place throughout the city, hopefully Cuomo’s goals to get New Yorkers in electric cars pans out.

While electric vehicles can help us move toward a future where we are free from oil, they are not a near-term solution to our oil problem. Costly patents restrict the development of battery technology, the weak battery supply chain is another challenge, and technology adoption can take decades. EVs are great in combination with other viable replacement fuels, like ethanol, methanol and natural gas.
