ICFF is now in full swing here in NYC ^[4], and more than a handful of our favorite designers and architects are putting their never before seen work on show. One standout design comes from shipping container ^[5]starchitects LOT-EK ^[6], whose model of the Pier 57 ^[7] conversion is now on display at the Diane von Furstenberg ^[8] store in the Meat Packing District as part of neighborhood’s nod to the design festivities. LOT-EK’s design for the conversion of Pier 57 transforms the utilitarian industrial complex into a four-story public building that weaves the outdoor environment of the Hudson River Park with cultural and leisure indoor activities.

Not unlike many of LOT-EK’s ^[9]other constructions, the design focuses on creating an open and enriching public space for its visitors with recycled materials ^[10]. Through the use of shipping containers, Pier 57′s program is a balance of open markets, galleries, restaurants and retail, distributed across four floors. A small boat marina sits below along the exterior esplanade, and a rooftop park with an outdoor amphitheater crosses the entire building creating a seamless connection with the Hudson River Park below. Once complete, the amphitheater will also become the new permanent home for outdoor screening and performances for the Tribeca Film Festival.

Construction on the project will commence next year.
