The renovation organizes the public and private areas of the home, while also creating a formal entrance and a much needed master suite bedroom. Initially, the entrance to the 1960s era home was through the carport, but Method’s redesign created a grand entrance in the front of the property, that harmonizes with the sloping hills of the landscape. The master suite addition floats above the new entrance, creating a protecting overhang that extends to the side of the home.
The master suite addition was designed to float above an unused space of the land, transforming it into a covered porch area. Held up by angled columns, the bedroom is capped with a glass wall that opens onto a small balcony. The angular columns also mimic the thin trees that populate the property, tying in the design of the home to the land. The new additions are also capped with weathered steel, which repeats on the underside of the floating partition.
The entire house was also re-clad with sustainable materials, including rain screens of cedar which echo the trees in the area. The renovated DPR House transformed a basic hillside structure into a spacious home that connects the architecture to the land with porches, balconies and architectural details.
