Mayor Bloomberg‘s Economic Development Council is currently looking for a private developer to create what could soon be the largest rooftop farm in the world. The farm, planned for the Hunts Point neighborhood of the Bronx, would be the latest (and greenest) addition to the area’s already massive food distribution center, with the New Fulton Fish Market and the renowned Hunts Point produce and meat markets already in residence. Currently, another massive rooftop farm is being developed in Brooklyn, but the idea to bring the source of the food even closer to where many NY retailers purchase their produce makes a lot of logistical sense to us.
Luxury grocer Citarella and food distributor Sultana occupy the inside of the massive warehouse on whose roof the farm will sit, and at an expansive 200,000 square feet, it will be twice the size of the next biggest rooftop farm in development–which is also in NYC, in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Sunset Park. Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., whose office has financed 13 other green roof projects in The Bronx, stands in full support of the project, and EDC president Seth Pinsky expects the farm to not only enhance the city’s existing food distribution network, but provide hundreds of jobs as well.
Perhaps best of all, the enclosed, year-round farm, to be located at 600 Food Center Drive, will also offer fresh, local produce to thousands of Bronx households that will greatly appreciate it.
