The designer wanted to create a house of shoes for the Spanish shoemaker

Although this is his first retail project, this is not the first time Shigeru Ban has worked in New York City. One of our favorite of his four NY projects to date remains the Metal Shutter houses completed last year. Attending a rambunctious opening party, the quiet designer told The Observer that he wanted to “create a house of shoes” for Camper, which is why he opted to place a pitched roof made of paper tubes on the roof.

Giant floor-to-ceiling windows slide in and out of place, breaking the boundary between the store’s interior and the bustling city outside, while the large red and white Camper sign inside, which is easily visible from afar, actually disguises a series of unique display shelves for the shoes. It’s a small space that still retains a sense of expansiveness thanks to Ban’s expert minimalism. “I tried to make it a surprise, so you find the Camper before you find the shoes,” Ban told The Observer.
