The ground floor provides shared common space, a fitness room, computer lab, and laundry facilities, which are supported by social supportive services and administration offices.

The Hegeman Residence provides permanent, affordable housing for single adults in the under-resourced neighborhood of Brownsville, Brooklyn. This is the first project for Common Ground Community developed under their Green Campaign, which emphasizes good health and indoor air quality, restorative and biophilic design, and best practices to save tenants money on energy bills. The building provides studio apartments for 100 formerly homeless single adults and 61 low-income working adults. The studios have natural daylighting, views to green space, non-toxic furniture and are each individually metered to encourage energy conservation.

Manhattan-based Cook + Fox developed the plan to convert the former parking lot into a five-story brick building capped with a 3,400 square feet green roof and a photovoltaic system that generates electricity for outdoor lighting. The building is constructed of economical brick masonry and features two wings connected by a central glass atrium. The ground floor provides shared common space, a fitness room, computer lab, and laundry facilities, which are supported by social supportive services and administration offices. On the ground floor behind the building is a private garden for residents connected to a public community garden for growing vegetables. The project opened in 2012 and was awarded LEED Silver certification is anticipated.
