Old Burbank Water Facility Transformed into California’s First Sustainable Utility EcoCampus

    <a href="http://www.ahbe.com">AHBE</a> landscape architects recently transformed the old <a href="http://www.burbankwaterandpower.com">Burbank Water and Power</a> facility into EcoCampus - California's first sustainable utility campus. The industrial relic of the past is now a regenerative green beacon for the future, and the new site is decked out with green rooftop gardens, <a href="http://inhabitat.com/tag/solar-power/">solar power</a> panels, and water reclamation and filtration facilities.

    The renovation is part of the international pilot program the Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES) which seeks to rejuvinate 150 projects.

    California's LEED Platinum warehouse, one of the buildings located on the EcoCampus, has been returned to its former glory as an Art Deco design.

    AHBE, the LA-based firm commissioned for the project, are known specifically for landscape architecture that links the industrial with ecology.

    The roof gardens sound equally impressive, consisting of three rooftop areas to help reduce a 'heat island effect' and act as a means of channeling and filtering storm water.

    Burbank Water and Power has was created in 1913 and today provides water and electricity services to 45,000 households in Burbank, California.
