The Solaire’s green roof garden

This weekend was Open House New York – that special time of year when private architecture is opened up for public viewing. This year there was a focus on green design, which was perfect for all the Inhabitat-minded folks out there. Today I walked around a little bit and checked out The Solaire (the country’s first green residential tower), and The Bohen Foundation, an art gallery designed out of recycled shipping containers by Lot-ek.

The Solaire’s green roof is pretty gorgeous, even if the rest of the building is a little architecturally bland. BUT, bland architecture or not – these guys deserve props – this was the first green residential tower in the US, and successfully proved that people will pay a premium for green apartment buildings. And they recycle ALL their awater – including blackwater! That’s hardcore.

What is the solaire? Is it a place where you can go and just forget about the world?

I think green roofs should be mandatory for all inner city buildings and even residential homes. It is absolutely gastly to look out some windows of inner city buildings. Why did it take us such a long time to do something about it?
