Gallery: Peter Marigold’s Log Chess Set is Made from a Single Branch

The Log Chess Set is a handmade, woodland version of the classic board game. Designed by British designer Peter Marigold, the set was made using only a single tree branch. Originally created for use while the designer was completing an artist residency at NKD in Norway, this rough and ready eco-friendly design is both unique and wonderful.

The Log Chess Set was created as one-of-a-kind piece, and the final dimensions and overall design were wholly determined by the material available at the time. Different parts of the branch were carefully chosen to emphasize the appearance of each chess piece in their traditional form. In the designer’s own words: “The kings and queens have snooty upturned noses while the horses have long down-turned snouts. The smaller pieces of the branch are used for pawns, while the larger pieces are used for more solid castles.”

Organic, biodegradable, unique and whimsical, Peter Marigold’s rough and ready Log Chess Set could make a great DIY project and gift!
