Aedas Architects and a team of other world-class consultants and designers have conceived of PierESCAPE: a series of outdoor “dock-like extensions” aimed at revitalizing Chicago’s famous Navy Pier. This proposal promises to strengthen connections between the city and nature, and between civic space and culture in a manner that is exciting, enriching, and sustainable, according to Arch Daily. As part of their Centennial Vision to make it a leading destination for international and domestic travelers, last September the city invited design firms from around the globe to submit their ideas to transform Navy Pier into a vibrant architectural, cultural, environmental, and recreational landscape. Aedas’ design stands out for its intent to create an outdoor public space that respects the project’s historical context.
Visitors that cross into Wetland Stream will be greeted with a host of fun and interactive spaces that pay allegiance to Lake Michigan shoreline. Also included in the design is “the Porch” – a public space that acts as a bridge between the Pier and the city and anchors the various outdoor programs and activities. Stainless steel “lighters” that mimic the Chicago skyline illuminate the night and a south-facing pathway overlooks a series of floating gardens that lend an additional “green” element to this waterfront design.
