Pirwi: Sustainable Designs Made in Mexico Make an Appearance at Milan Design Week

  • Centipede by Hector Esrawe for Pirwi
    <a href="http://www.pirwi.com">Pirwi</a>, a young Mexican furniture brand with sustainability embedded in its DNA, presented its collections at the <a href="http://inhabitat.com/milan-furniture-fair">Milan Furniture Fair</a> for the first time last week. Founded in 2007 by designers <a href="http://www.alejandrocastro.com/">Alejandro Castro</a> and <a href="http://www.emilianogodoy.com/">Emiliano Godoy</a>, Pirwi has grown from a small laboratory exploring eco-design to a full-fledged company with a catalogue of over 100 products that combine technology, local craftsmanship and sustainable materials.

    A carved camouflage pattern on the blackstained venner surface reveal the OSB structure of this oversized low armchair that can almost hide the user.

    In the same way as the Hiab chair, a progresive curved-cut structure shows underneath the glass surface of this elegant table.

    A chair with an interesting design, where the seat and rest have a gentle curve formed by precise computer controlled cuts, that provide comfort and an impresive visual element.

    A table that salvages young teak from thinning wood (normally discarded) that are put together creating a colorful pattern on its surface.

    Jam is a folding stool formed by wood planes joined by cotton rope hinges.

    This chair, originally designed for an exhibition at a New York gallery, creates an interesting visual pattern of flat and stripped textures by showing the face and edge of birch plywood.

    The Syb table is a flat packed design of only 3 structural pieces that the end user can assembled easily at home by pressing oversized wedges into place.

    Eight identical pieces make up the Sahuaro coat stand. Its design imitates the trunks and branches of trees.

    A room divider with a striking graphic which panels superimpose one on top of another.

    Maroma is a playful modular storage inspired by a traditional Mexican toy. Three slanted cubes attached by straps allow the cubes to rotate along two axes, which allow the end user to create several configurations.

    MOD table is a customizable workstation divided into two parts, one side stores items that need to be kept accessible, while the other side provides a cable management solution by concealing peripherals under the working area.
