Gallery: Pratt Students Design Eco-Fri...

Just yesterday the Pratt Design Incubator for Sustainable Innovation and home furnishings company West Elm introduced their eco-friendly office collection. This amazing product line began with a competition between 12 of Pratt’s industrial design students. The group of students were split into two teams and were challenged to design a line of office furniture using FSC certified materials. The final review gave each team the opportunity to present their ingenious proposals to the West Elm design group, where the standout designs were selected for further development to realize the new concepts as full-size prototypes. The final gesture brought forth a wide-ranging collection that include a desk, chair, filing system and LED lamp!

The centerpiece of the collection is a sleek and highly functional desk is made with FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified wood, which can also double as a dining room table. The desk also sets the stage for the rest of the collection and is easily complimented by the line’s contemporary, energy- and cost-efficient LED desk lamp, eco-friendly and stackable office chairs, and a retro filing cabinet made from a fusion of low-carbon-emission medium density fiberboard, FSC-certified eucalyptus wood and powder-coated metal.
