Bornego College-HVDN StudioninedotsThis new facility for Bornego College in Heerenveen in The Netherlands is an example of how to create a sustainable and cost effective project. Designed by HVDN and Studioninedots, the energy-efficient building accomodates a variety of uses with classrooms, lockers, study areas and a sports hall. Prefabricated concrete elements drastically reduced construction time and recycled bricks adorn the exterior.1
Bornego College-HVDN StudioninedotsBornego College commissioned HVDN and Studioninedots to design and build a new facility for their first year students in a spot adjacent to the school.2
Bornego College-HVDN StudioninedotsThe goal of the new building, besides providing useful space for the school, was to create a cost-effective, energy efficient and sustainable school.3
Bornego College-HVDN StudioninedotsThe designers chose to keep the building's footprint compact to minimize effects on the site and maximize energy use and daylighting.4
Bornego College-HVDN StudioninedotsSlightly sunk into the earth, the three-story building has a taller ground floor and is protected by the earth.5

Bornego College-HVDN StudioninedotsThis atrium also helps dissipate heat from the classrooms, thus reducing installation of ducts and costs.11
Bornego College-HVDN StudioninedotsPrefabricated concrete elements reduced construction time and the facade is clad in recycled bricks.12
Bornego College-HVDN StudioninedotsTo create unity across the multi-colored bricks, they plastered the exterior with a light grey concrete.13
