PREFAB FRIDAY: Archipod’s Spherical Garden Office Pod

Those of us who work from home know the importance of creating an office space - a place we can slink into with our morning coffee, shut the door, and get down to business. In the computer age, all you need is a desk, a <a href="http://www.inhabitat.com/2010/01/08/sony-unveils-ultra-green-vaio-w-series-laptop-at-ces/">laptop</a>, a good chair and maybe an <a href="http://www.inhabitat.com/2009/08/05/treetop-office-eat-your-heart-out-cubicle-warrior/">inspiring view</a>. <a href="http://www.archipod.co.uk/" target="_blank">Archipod</a> offers a new take on the home office with its spherical <a href="http://www.inhabitat.com/2010/01/22/space-age-solar-powered-pod-house-unveiled/" target="_blank">garden pod</a>, a beautiful prefabricated room that is perfect for your backyard.

UK-based <a href="http://www.archipod.co.uk/" target="_blank">Archipod</a> is betting that a lot of people who work from home don't have the space they need, so they designed and built this chic little pod. Since the pod is <a href="../architecture/prefab-housing/">prefabricated</a> in sections small enough to fit through a door, it's easy to install one just about anywhere. Heck, it might even be able to fit inside your house if you needed it to.

Waste is minimized during the factory manufacturing process, and FSC certified timber is used for the structure and cladding in addition to recycled fiberglass insulation. Archipod is currently exploring the use of more <a href="../recycledmaterials" target="_blank">recycled materials</a> in the construction of the pod.

The door opens upwards like a <a href="http://www.inhabitat.com/2009/07/21/gullwing-revived-as-all-electric-supercar/" target="_blank">gullwing car door</a>, which makes it feel like you're stepping into a futuristic space ship rather than your office.

The pod has a large roof dome to let in ample <a href="http://www.inhabitat.com/daylighting/">natural light</a> during the day, and it has one porthole window for viewing.

The desk inside is semi-circular, ergonomic and covered in <a href="http://www.greendepot.com/greendepot/product.asp?prod_name=Forbo+Marmoleum+Flooring&amp;pf_id=FORBO">Marmoleum</a>®. The pod comes ready with electrical outlets, data ports, an electric heater, mood lighting and a smoke alarm.
