Have an old cell phone just sitting in your electronics drawer? Consider putting it to good use and donating it to ReCellular’s Phones for Haiti program, a cell phone recycling initiative to provide disaster relief for the recent Haiti earthquake. There are over one billion used phones sitting around and gathering dust, and just a tiny percentage of those could equal millions of dollars for quake victims.

Your donated cell phones won’t go directly to quake victims — instead, ReCellular refurbishes and sells the phones in developing countries as an alternative to new models. The full value of each donated phone is then contributed to the American Red Cross.

In some cases (i.e. with a new iPhone or similar smartphone), up to $100 is contributed to relief efforts. Non-functional phones, batteries, and chargers are also accepted. So what are you waiting for? ReCellular offers free shipping, so there’s no excuse not to donate.

And the profiters are coming from all over while people of Haiti are poor and if they continue with the same mega NGOs like the Red Cross supposedly helping they will remain poor forever. Recycling old cell phones to refurbish and cell to raise for the Red Cross which has raised in excess of $500M for Haiti Relief does nothing to help stabilize the country and its people. Red Cross and all NGOs in the country continue to hand the people a fish to eat for one instead of teaching them to fish so they can eat everyday.
